Google is working on a new update system for Chrome that could eliminate one of the browser's biggest annoyances: mandatory restarts. The initiative aims to strengthen security while making updates nearly invisible to users.
For years, Chrome has relied on background downloads followed by a browser restart before security patches become active. While the process is relatively simple, many users postpone restarting, leaving their browsers exposed to vulnerabilities that have already been fixed.
Google now plans to change that.
According to the company's latest security roadmap, Chrome is being redesigned around a concept called dynamic patching, allowing critical fixes to be applied without requiring a full browser restart in many situations. The goal is to reduce friction while ensuring users remain protected against newly discovered threats.
Fighting the Growing Speed of Cyberattacks
The move comes as security researchers face an increasingly aggressive threat landscape driven by artificial intelligence. Attackers are able to identify and weaponize vulnerabilities more quickly, shrinking the window between the disclosure of a flaw and its active exploitation.
Google says recent advances in AI-assisted security have dramatically increased the number of bugs identified and fixed inside Chrome. Versions 149 and 150 together included more than 1,000 bug fixes, exceeding the combined total from dozens of previous major releases.
This rapid pace is also influencing Chrome's release strategy. Beginning in September, Google will move the browser to a two week release cycle, delivering security improvements more frequently than before.
Reducing User Dependency
One of Google's primary concerns is protecting users from so called N-day attacks, where attackers exploit vulnerabilities after fixes have already been released but before users install the update.
Instead of relying on users to restart Chrome promptly, Google wants the browser to handle much of the process automatically.
The company has already introduced an early version of this behavior on macOS, where Chrome can restart itself in the background when no browser windows are open, preserving the user's session while minimizing disruption.
Toward an Always Updated Browser
Google describes its long term vision as a browser that continuously receives security improvements in the background, automatically applying patches and restarting only during moments that have little or no impact on the user experience.
If successful, the approach could significantly improve browser security by shortening the time between vulnerability disclosure and protection, without requiring users to interrupt their workflow.
Although the feature is still under development, it represents one of the most significant changes to Chrome's update mechanism in years. As cyber threats continue to evolve, making security updates both faster and less intrusive may become an industry standard rather than a competitive advantage.
